Artist Statement
Qiao Chen is a New York-based classical pianist and interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in collaborative piano, with a focus on vocal collaboration, opera coaching, and the interpretation of art song. Her work explores the intersections of music, language, and dramatic structure, viewing sound not only as musical expression but also as a narrative medium through which text, emotion, and human experience are articulated.
At the heart of her artistic practice is a deep engagement with collaborative performance, particularly within the traditions of German Lieder and French mélodie. She is interested in the structural relationships between poetry and music, the dialogue between singer and pianist, and the interpretive possibilities that emerge through text-based musical analysis and dramatic storytelling. Her artistic interests extend from the Romantic period to the early twentieth century, where literature and music converge to create richly layered forms of expression.
Beyond the concert stage, Qiao Chen is committed to expanding the role of music within broader cultural contexts. Through curatorial projects, salon programs, museum initiatives, public conversations, and interdisciplinary collaborations, she explores new ways of experiencing and sharing classical music, encouraging meaningful dialogue between audiences, artworks, and cultural history.
Her practice is equally informed by a long-standing interest in fine arts, art history, architecture, and the art of living. She is particularly drawn to the relationships between sound and space, and to the ways architecture, interiors, light, materiality, and sensory atmosphere shape aesthetic perception. These observations continually influence her approach to musical interpretation, reinforcing her belief that artistic experience is inherently multisensory and deeply interconnected.
Underlying her work is an ongoing exploration of how meaning is constructed across different artistic languages. Whether through music, literature, visual art, or spatial experience, Qiao Chen seeks to cultivate a holistic artistic practice that connects disciplines, enriches cultural dialogue, and invites audiences to engage with art as an integral part of everyday life.
Qiao holds a Master of Music in Collaborative Piano from the Manhattan School of Music in New York and a Bachelor of Music from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in Shanghai (China). Following her graduate studies, she joined the artistic staff at the Manhattan School of Music as a Staff Pianist, where she collaborates with faculty members, singers, instrumentalists, and students in rehearsals, performances, lessons, and masterclasses.
Her performance experience includes collaborative appearances in major concert venues in New York, including Carnegie Hall. She has also actively participated many in international music festivals and artistic programs, serving in various collaborative roles, including staff accompanist, fellowship pianist, vocal coach, rehearsal pianist, and orchestra pianist.
Through her work as a collaborative pianist, Qiao Chen continues to engage with diverse musical communities and artistic environments, contributing to performances, educational programs, and collaborative projects across different cultural contexts.
